People like people who care about people. And so it’s only natural organisations with a strong social responsibility can oftentimes see higher engagement levels among the employees. Especially in this time and place, where companies are fighting for talent – while talent wants purpose to go with their salaries.

More than that, though, engagement can increase if the employees are actually able to affect the areas in which to help. This according to a study by University of British Columbia (UBC), including answers from 673 employees around the world, and showing that the CSR ‘s (Corporate Social Responsibility) impact on purpose, and with that engagement, goes up some 20 % if the employees are given a choice.

“Employees’ sense of meaningfulness and work engagement increases when they have autonomy and a sense of choice in their organization’s CSR activities,” says UBC´s Daniel Skarlicki, professor at the university’s Sauder School of Business, to HR Reporter, and adds that it is particularly important for gen Y and Z.
